Jim's brother had bought an old Hobie 16 and we decided to take it out for some fun. Neither one of us knew what we were doing, but we managed to get it setup and in the water for some light wind sailing on Lake Chelan . I later met a guy from work that owned a NACRA 5.2, he did know what he was doing and needed someone to crew for him. He showed me what it meant to go fast using only sail power. It was a couple of years later before we could afford our own boat, a used 1983 Hobie 16. Soon after our purchase, Wenatchee formed its first Hobie Cat Fleet, there were 14 boats, those that knew how to organize a regatta put on races, and soon we were brave enough to join in at a big race, participating in a Hobie Points Regatta in Bellingham . At first the kids were too small to race with us, so I drafted a friend to crew for me for the first couple of years. In 1990 I bought a new Hobie 17 (single handed boat) to race with until the kids got bigger. In 1993, we bought a brand new Hobie SX-18, with the wings, spinnaker and everything. We raced that boat as a family for 13 years, we won some and lost many, but racing together turned out to be the glue that really bonded the family together. Today both Heather and Kip are good sailors a sport they will carry with them for years to come. I'm back to sailing a Hobie 17 (single handed again), Kip wants to race that old 16 I first sailed on, and Heather has been in school out of town. Heather soon graduates from the university and she's indicated it's time for me to find another Hobie 18 so we can again race together. In the near future, Della and I plan on purchasing something we can park on the lake, like a Catalina 25 (Russ's boat impressed me).

Don and Jane Lloyd, Randy and Anne Brooks, "Cabernet", a 1973 Coronado 32 Mk II. We are the third owners of this well cared for, comfortable, cruiser. We bought the Cabernet in 2004 and moved her from the Olympia Yacht Club to Lake Chelan in early July. Since then we've enjoyed many day sails, and overnight trips, as well as the annual sailing association week long trip to Stehekin. The Cabernet makes a great, roomy, Committee Boat for the annual sailing regatta."

Jim and Carol Hofmann, Santa Cruz 27 "Solstice" Jim and Carol launch their forays into sailing from The Cove on Lake Chelan. Jim spent a few years in the Puget Sound area in the late 1960's and learned to sail from friends there. After moving to Wenatchee, he continued to sail on friends' boats and then bought his first sailboat in 1979. He and Carol spent many of their summer weekends on that boat and vacationed on it both up-lake and in the San Juan and Gulf Islands areas. Solstice, the Santa Cruz 27, became a part of their family in the spring of 2003 and the sailing life changed from the gentle cruising of the past to spirited day-sails on this off-shore rated racing boat. Originally classified as an Ultra Light Displacement Boat in the early 1980's the performance of the SC-27 is now surpassed by the sport boats with modern construction materials of kevlar, epoxy, and carbon fiber. While not competitive with the newer and lighter boats, the SC still provides a sturdy and fast sailing thrill. Jim is totally addicted to it. Jim and Carol look forward to meeting the other sailors on the lake and they welcome them that may wish to join them for a ride or a race.

Garrett and Chrisitina Baum Currently sailing: San Juan 21 (and anything else with a wet bottom) While Garrett and Christina are currently exilied to California we still consider them a part of us - they send this greeting- I thought I would send a couple of these pictures of us on our san juan 21 here in Ventura California tearing up the ocean waves a couple of weeks ago. The photos are of braedon our 7 year old son and I out watching a j-24 regatta that Christina was racing in. Our daughter Trevor Kane is down below sleeping. Sorry to tell you this is the typical October weather around here and as you can see we are bundled up. I thought if you would like you could put these on the Chelan sailing website even though we are not members. If we lived up there we would be members. Anyway, enjoy the pictures, hope all is going well. Garrett
